James is a retail specialist, with more than 15 years’ experience that spans from strategy to operations.

James brings a great combination of industry expertise with extensive change management experience and loves to work either at C-suite level or with teams on the frontline. His blend of strategic and operational skills mean that he is equally comfortable developing a new company operating model as he is coaching new ways of working to drive continuous improvement.

Before joining Egremont in 2017, James worked at Wal-Mart/ASDA as a company officer and before that Tesco, in a variety of operational roles. At Wal-Mart/ASDA he led the strategic development of the UK business through the creation of new, more agile formats and the delivery of the estate development strategy. During his 10-year career at Tesco, James developed a new approach to operating ‘difficult to manage’ shops; formed and delivered the sustainability programme for the estate that dramatically reduced the carbon footprint of the business and led the physical expansion of the stores as Development Director.

During his early career, James spent ten years developing business for UK, US and European clients from a variety of companies in Asia on behalf of Mitsui & Co. which was then Japan’s largest General Trading company or Sogo Shosha. He then moved on to Gemini Consulting for a period before joining Tesco.

James has an MBA from Cranfield and has used his retail and customer focus in other sectors, most recently with one of the largest social housing operators in the UK.

He is a keen triathlete whose training regime is lovingly distracted by the time he spends in Derbyshire with his wife Sarah, their young twins and energetic spaniels.
