Anticipating the Future
“Life wouldn’t be worth living if I worried over the future as well as the present.” William Somerset Maugham
In these times of economic hardship we could be forgiven for thinking that we have enough on our plates without thinking ahead 10 years. After all, what can we possibly know about the world in 2020? Back in the late 80’s no-one had heard of Google, ebay, Primark, iPhones etc and who could have predicted them? The trouble is, most of us, even in good times, find it hard to fast forward 10 years and anticipate the future. Fortunately some of our clients have recognised the opportunities that lie ahead and have asked us to help them to work future back (as opposed to present forward), to identify some key drivers of change and how they need to respond to them today.
We know that change is exponential, not linear. It is driven by population growth, natural resources in decline, climate change, societal shifts, technology and the growth of the global economy. We are working with our clients to help them filter these macro trends down into their industries and into implications for their organisations. Leaders in this new world need to be providing vision, guidance and focus whilst encouraging a model of distributed leadership.
