It’s been a bleak period for British manufacturing with output today 10% lower than it was in 2006 but there is a glimmer of hope.  We have seen the strongest year of growth for more than a decade and a half, and there is room for improvement.

Manufacturing was the pioneering industry behind Lean process improvement and as other industries looked on enviously, manufacturing companies stripped out their costs and improved their performance standards.  These days, however, manufacturing would do well to look to their counterparts in service industries such as retail, who have taken the best parts of Lean and adapted them and embedded them within change management programmes which address issues of sustainability, continuous improvement and leadership alignment.  They look at the system, not just the process.
